The Integration of Virtual Tours Template (VTT) and a Web-based Online Teaching and Learning Approach to Enhance Students Independent Learning Ability in Health and Physical Education

Abstract:

The purpose of this project is to integrate a Virtual Tours Template (VTT) into a web-based online teaching and learning system for current undergraduate independent learning mode, and direct-study learning mode for the Master of Education (MEd) / Doctor of Education (EdD) programme. This web-based VTT online teaching and learning template was suitable to teaching various modules in HPE programme. The web-based online teaching template includes a blended learning (combination of online learning and face-to-face guidance/supervision for undergraduate level and a total online approach for graduate level with supervision through online) approach that focused on training students’ independent self-learning ability. The use of online learning created alternative learning spaces for both students and instructor to enhance teaching and learning opportunities. In addition, the project designed several teaching and learning activities to focus on students’ independent self-learning skills embedded within the Blackboard learning management system. The project also provided a template which demonstrated how to integrate a VTT into a web-based online teaching system in teaching HPE modules. Three web-based online learning activity templates (Independent Self-learning approach package, Problem Solving Learning approach model, and Online Collaboration approach model) were designed to illustrate how to transform teacher’s instructional activities into students’ self-learning and collaboration activities that were applicable for the alternative e-learning approach for the future.

Result:

The project produced the following outcomes:

A website namely “The Application if Web-based VTT in Physical Education and Sports Science”
A web-based online self-learning package which included a complete structure through Blackboard that consists of 4 levels of learning processes for each lecture
Lecture outlines

Reading Material
Supporting Material
Discussion Board

Web-based online learning activity templates including:

Independent Self-learning approach package,
Problem Solving Learning approach model (improve problem solving skill),
Online Collaboration approach model embedded within the Blackboard learning system (improve collaboration and communication skill)

Impact:

The project achieved its objectives and developed a website entitled “The Application of Web-based VTT in Physical Education and Sports Science”. The website works very well, and was introduced to students. The web-based online self-learning package and three Web-based online learning activity templates were also introduced to teachers and students. This project made online module of Physical Education available for undergraduate independent learning mode, and direct-study learning mode for the MEd/EdD programme. Teaching of Physical Education became more dynamic and effective, and the learning also became much easier and interesting.
