Abstract:
This project aims to enhance the cultural competence of 102 students enrolled in counseling and sexuality education courses by integrating the following teaching and learning strategies: 1) Panel presentation; 2) Case studies; 3) Experiential learning. The translated MCKAS and ATLG scales were selected to measure the effectiveness of the intervention of teaching and learning strategies. Significant differences were found in groups with cultural competence training and without cultural competence training. The intervention groups with students having cultural competence training, using the strategies of case studies, experiential learning and panel presentation were found to have higher scores in cultural awareness and knowledge subscales than those groups who did not receive such training. The overall course evaluation demonstrated very positive feedbacks from participating students. We have collaborated with diverse community/cultural groups/social service agencies, such as those serving ethnic minorities, children with special educational needs, disability groups, sexual and gender minorities etc. to participate in our project, by facilitating our students’ agency visits, by offering panel sharing, and by providing case studies to facilitate our students’ learning. Close collaboration has been established with 24 community groups in community counseling and sex education. They have become our long-term collaborators in teaching and research.

Quantitative study with post-group analysis indicated that students with educational input in multicultural training appeared to have a higher awareness of multicultural competence and more tolerance to sexual minorities than those students who did not receive such educational inputs. However, this is not a randomly designed study, and the data only collected from post-intervention stage, the results are having limitations for further inference. Content analysis of the weekly reflective journals had found the following preliminary themes: Theme 1) Cultural knowledge, curiosity and challenges to personal limitation; Theme 2) Observation, engagement and active learning, and Theme 3) Desire and motivation for inter-group communication; Theme 4) Reflective experience with teaching and learning strategies. Close collaboration has been established with 24 community groups in community counseling and sex education. They have become our long-term collaborators in teaching and research.
