Enhancing HKIEd Students’ IELTS and General Vocabulary through Incorporating e-Learning into English Enhancement Courses

Abstract:

As a mobile device and tablet application, WordEngine is designed for boosting users’ knowledge in English vocabulary.  Given the cutting-edge reputation of WE in the field of Teaching English as a second, foreign, or other language (TESOL) some time ago, this TDG project was an attempt to introduce an alternative resource for enhancing the English vocabulary of HKIEd students.  It was hoped that through interactive and game-like activities, students would be better motivated to learn English and foster a habit of independent learning of vocabulary.  Although the application might not meet the learning preference of each and every participant, it has opened up a new mode of e-learning (in addition to gaining online access by computer) in learning English in this campus.  In fact, it is evident that some students did get used to doing the weekly exercises.
