Abstract:
Recently, there are strong needs from Hong Kong Education Bureau, local schools and institution to promote STEAM (STEM+ Arts) education so as to nurture students’ creativity, innovation, collaboration and problem-solving skills through the integration of academic disciplines of Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. This project aims at equipping our education major students who are our future teacher with the necessary concepts and skills through various tailor-made teaching and learning tasks.
This project is divided into five phases. Students are able: (I) To invent a musical instrument(s) through the application of electronic building blocks; (2) To design a music programme by applying relevant coding language which connects objects with virtual patch to create interactive sounds for the invented electronic instrument; (3) To create a piece of creative music for the instruments by applying contemporary composition techniques; (4) To perform the composition in public; (5) To appraise and evaluate the creative process and product from scientific, technological, engineering, art and mathematical perspectives.

Result:
The result finding showed that the STEAM music activities can enhance students' creativity and creative confidence by providing them with the necessary conditions to create, including a student-centred teaching approach, collaborative environment and openness to different ideas. Through active participation in group for musical instrument making, coding design, composition with contemporary composition techniques, perform and videotape their own composition, students learn to create music together and evaluate their product with STEAM perspectives. The research finding, teaching scheme and resources was published in print and online, with book title "STEAM Education with Music: Research, Teaching Design and Resources", and being distributed to school music teachers and uploaded in the Music and Innovation Design Lab website (https://www.musiclab.com/teaching-manual). A STEAM teaching workshop was held to share the experience and train the in-service music teachers.
Impact:
The STEAM Education publication aims to share research findings on the implementation of an innovative STEAM course and to provide teaching manual exemplars and resources for in-service music teachers in conducting STEAM activities in classroom music. The scheme of work is aligned with the current Education Bureau Music Curriculum in which STEAM activities are combined with various listening, performing and creating activities. With the substantial needs of schools to implement STEAM teaching in music lessons, this teaching manual provides a successful model and practical teaching schemes for school music teachers to learn and apply directly.
