Abstract:
The aim of this project is to develop an “Online Cantonese Self-learning Platform” for non-Chinese-speaking students at our university as well as foreign teaching staff and community members who have a need to learn Cantonese. The platform will align with the teaching themes and learning needs of the Cantonese courses offered by our centre. It will provide students with more topic-based content and online practice resources for self-learning. The goal is to complement existing subject teaching content and enable students to overcome the limitations of time and space, allowing them to engage in active self-directed learning anytime and anywhere outside the classroom.

Result:
An ‘Online Cantonese self-learning platform’ will be developed under the project, which caters to the Cantonese learning needs of non-Chinese-speaking students and foreign learners. The learning resources provided on the platform will include: (i) Eight sets of situational dialogues in Cantonese covering different topics, from daily life occasions to classroom contexts. Every dialogue will have parallel texts in Jyutping, Cantonese characters, written Chinese, and English for students’ easier comprehension; (ii) Resourceful lists of commonly used Cantonese vocabularies and phrases associated with the eight designated topics to provide sufficient lexical resources for students’ Cantonese listening and speaking enhancement; (iii) Batches of audio files recorded by sound recordist of the Cantonese self-learning materials including pharases and dialogues, and (iv) online exercises for self-assessment at the end of each chapter to reinforce students’ Cantonese learning effectiveness.
Impact:
Firstly, the project will help promoting cross-cultural understanding between the non-Chinese speaking students as well as the foreign students and the Hong Kong local community. Students will be able to deepen their understanding of Hong Kong’s social and cultural aspects through learning Cantonese via the platform. Secondly, the self-learning platform enables students to learn Cantonese independently without limitation of time and places, which helps to extend learner’s exposure to Cantonese contents and hence enhance learning effectiveness. Thirdly, on the design of the new e-learning materials, the project will seek to update the current Cantonese course materials to increase synergistic effect between the written materials and the online platform. This will assist students in better adapting and integrating into the local social, educational, and employment environment, promoting cross-cultural communication.
