Abstract:
Authentic assessment refers to the evaluation methods that reflect real-world tasks and challenges, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in practical contexts. It is recognized as an effective way to support self-regulated learning through enhancing student engagement, fostering critical thinking, and better preparing learners for professional success by bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Throughout the project, the team put emphasis on organizing a series of sharing sessions in collaboration with HKBU. These events successfully promoted the use of authentic assessments and encouraged educators to adopt various educational technologies and feedback methods to create a more engaging and interactive classroom environment. Additionally, the project team conducted research on students’ and teachers’ perspectives regarding authentic assessment to gain a deeper understanding of its implementation at the university.

Result:
During the project period, 17 events were conducted, including 15 workshops and seminars, as well as two symposia. These activities attracted a total of 627 EdUHK members and 1,030 participants from sister universities. Following the events, the project team collected feedback through surveys and discovered that most participants had positive responses regarding the sharing sessions on authentic assessments. Overall, attendees found the seminars and workshops led by academic experts and experienced teachers effective in equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge.
Additionally, the project team conducted two large-scale institution-wide surveys and follow-up interviews to gather students’ and teachers’ perspectives on the implementation of authentic assessment throughout the project. The results indicated that students generally held a positive view of authentic assessments and would actively engage with innovative assessment methods.
Impact:
The consistently positive feedback received from the sharing sessions indicates that they not only equipped educators and students with essential knowledge and skills but also provided valuable opportunities for exchanging ideas and insights. The research findings underscore the critical importance of adopting authentic assessments in higher education, revealing that students found these methods engaging and beneficial for job preparation. The results suggest that higher education institutions must carefully consider how assessments are designed and implemented to optimize student engagement and enhance overall learning experiences. Furthermore, it is recommended that future studies can include a broader participant base segmented by programme and year of study, to better understand how perceptions and involvement vary among students.
This project has laid a strong foundation for ongoing discussions on the adoption of authentic assessment in higher education, positioning our university as a leader in developing effective assessment strategies that genuinely resonate with students.
