Building a Language Learning Autonomy Community

Abstract:

In the light of the New Language Policy (NLP), fundamental language supports have been built up, e.g. language enhancement courses, IELTS and PSC workshops, provision of online self-learning resources, ELPA tests and test score analysis. Based on these infrastructural policy and resource supports, a new stage that could be stepped into is to foster a students’ language self-learning environment across the institute. With such a mission, this project aims to set up a platform to link up all the self learning materials to stimulate and improve students’ self-learning motivation and capability in the momentum of “Blended learning” and “self-learning” which have always been emphasized in formal and non-formal language learning to support learner autonomy. For years, IEd has developed an abundant account of self-learning materials including on-line learning material packages developed from the ICOSA project and the 334/335 new initiative project. Different materials and databases are currently kept in different units and some research centres.
Objective of this project

This project is mainly to work with colleagues from various units to establish a platform to formulate an academic community to share all the relevant on-line self-learning language resources, and simultaneously to enhance “learning autonomy” to encourage students to do language learning by themselves outside the classroom.
To support the Institute policy in further enhancing the using of English and increasing percentage of EMI courses. This project will also invite inputs from other self-learning research outputs, e.g. the current CoP (April 2013 – June 2015) Project on BYOD Mobile Learning and multi-lingual activities, e.g. formal and non-formal learning activities organized by CLE and LML, in order to maximize the institute-wide efforts for establishing and fostering a students’ language self-learning environment across the institute.
