Developing an Online Platform for the Learning of French by Cantonese Learners

Abstract:

The project aims at the construction of an online platform dedicated to the learning and self-study of French by Cantonese speaking learners. It will offer resources targeting specific problems encountered by speakers of Cantonese when learning French and also give access to a curated list of resources available online which are relevant to them. The platform will also grant access to media content (audio and video) provided by France Medias Monde, a French international media organization who recently signed an agreement with the University. At the level of the University, the project is part of the efforts to internationalize the campus and boost the learning and teaching of modern languages, including French and the plans to open a minor in French studies. It will be integrated to the teaching of French at the University, but will also be usable independently. At the level of Hong Kong, the platform will offer resources to anyone interested in learning French while improving the visibility of the French programme offered at the university.

The project's deliverables included the following items:
i) A set of online learning resources created for and tailored to the needs of Cantonese learners.
ii) A website hosting these resources.

Impact:

The platform could benefit all students involved in the learning of French in Hong Kong, both in EdUHK and outside of it. Learners could use a variety of activities to improve several aspects of their knowledge of French such as pronunciation and syntax. Learners could give feedback on the tool and activities so that the platform would improve over time. The portal could be regularly updated so that the number of resources would continually grow.
