Abstract:
To cope with the challenges of the Twenty-first Century, our students need to be equipped with problem-solving skills. By contextualizing the learning content in a story supported by digital multimedia and visualizing step-by-step process of solving a problem, digital storytelling presents its effectiveness in fostering students’ problem-solving competence. But feedback of students’ learning tasks performance and less-motivated students are often neglected in solely digital storytelling strategy. Gamification can provide instant feedback on one’s actions or performance and keep one motivated by awarding game elements such as points, badges and ranks on leaderboards. Hence, we suggest combining digital storytelling with gamification mechanism to better guide students in solutions formulation, implementation and evaluation process. This project aims to explore the application of the digital storytelling-driven gamification (DSDG) approach to promote students’ problem-solving skills in real-world scenarios. Through the process of working with teammates, demonstrating and evaluating the solution, students could also develop their collaborative, communicative and research competencies. The final outputs will develop DSDG design guidelines based on the research findings. A digital toolkit and a series of sandbox workshops of DSDG using this toolkit to scaffold the design process will also be generated.

Here we showed the average mean of two versions of teaching strategy design results:
In this study, we looked at how a special learning approach called Digital Storytelling-Driven Gamification (DSDG) affected students in various ways. First, we compared students who used DSDG with those in the control group regarding their problem-solving skills. After using DSDG, the DSDG students showed much better learning performance, which means they got better at solving problems. We also checked how well students communicated and worked together. On discussion forums, the average number of posts was 23, and the quality was pretty high with an average score of 3.38 out of 4.0. We compared the quantity and quality of student posts on discussion forums. The results showed that the average number of each discussion forum was 23, and the average score of each post was 3.38/4.0.
The most exciting part was that students, as a group, could do their own research project. Before DSDG, their scores averaged 15.03, but after using it, their scores jumped to 75.88, which is a big improvement. Lastly, we asked students how they felt about using DSDG in the classroom. Most of them had a great time with it, found a strong connection with the game's characters, applied their knowledge in real life, and loved the comic strip style.
In simple terms, DSDG helped students solve problems better, work together effectively, and even do advanced research as a group. It also made learning more enjoyable and engaging.
Impact:
Combining digital storytelling with gamification, the study has yielded several positive outcomes for students. Firstly, the use of digital storytelling-driven gamification (DSDG) led to a substantial improvement in students' problem-solving skills, which is a crucial competence for the challenges of the 21st century. This approach made learning more engaging and effective, helping students develop their ability to formulate, implement, and evaluate solutions in real-world scenarios.
Furthermore, DSDG promoted collaborative and communicative skills among students. They were able to work together more effectively, as evidenced by their active participation in discussion forums. This not only enhances their problem-solving abilities but also prepares them for teamwork and communication in professional settings. Additionally, students reported a high level of satisfaction with DSDG, expressing a strong connection with the game's characters and finding enjoyment in the comic strip style. This positive feedback suggests that DSDG not only enhances educational outcomes but also makes learning a more enjoyable and engaging experience.
In summary, the DSDG approach has a profound impact on students' problem-solving skills, teamwork, research capabilities, and overall learning experience, making it a valuable method for modern education.
