Developing Personal Knowledge Management Training Curriculum Guide and Resources

Abstract:

This project aims to develop a Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) curriculum guide and resources to teacher educators for nurturing pre-service teachers’ PKM competencies and instructional design skills. Supporting the sustainable development of teachers as professionals in the knowledge society is a critical issue in teacher education. Developing a teacher education curriculum that could nurture pre-service teacher sustainable professional competencies becomes a significant research agenda and a practical issue to be addressed in teacher education. This project intends to adopt Dorsey’s PKM model to develop a curriculum guide and related resources that could be implemented in BEd programme of our Institute for developing pre-service teachers’ PKM competencies. The elements of PKM tools application, e-learning activities and collaborative action research will be developed and injected to the experiment courses (at least 8 courses from subject major, professional study, field experience and language courses) as an intervention to confirm the pre-service teachers’ PKM competency framework. The courses provide pre-service teachers with different degree of opportunities to carry out instructional design, lesson implementation and reflection through e-learning and collaborative action research activities. A Solomon four group quasi-experimental research design will be used to collect data from at least 16 courses from BEd Programme of pre-service teachers of our Institute. The results will be adopted to formulate a PKM curriculum guide as a reference for teacher education curriculum development.

Result:

The project set up a preliminary training model for PKM enhancement; and had implemented the preliminary model in three courses in 2014-2015. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations were carried out to measure the effectiveness of the preliminary curriculum. From quantitative study, it was found that the the PKM skill (analysing skilling) was enhanced significantly in the first LS course, and more PKM skills (retrieval skill and analysing skill) was also enhanced significantly in the second LS course. From the qualitative in-depth interview, it was concluded that the e-learning elements of a course made blended functions to enhance students' multiple PKM skills. The evaluation results showed a postive progress of the project, and it is expected that more refinement would be made so as to enhance the curriculum.

Impact:

Pre-service teachers' PKM competencies including gathering, classifying, storing, searching, and retrieving knowledge for instructional activities have been developed. The PKM competency model for pre-service teachers has been identified to be a four-factor structure which consists of retrieving, organizing, analyzing and collaborating skills. It is a multiple competency that contributes to pre-service teachers' acquisition of knowledge based on which their teaching effectiveness can be achieved. They can analyze learners' characteristics and the topics to be taught, identify learners' prior knowledge, design learning objectives and choose instructional approaches, develop instructional or training materials, implement lessons and deliver the instructional materials, and evaluate the lesson plans and recommend the materials that help to achieve the desired goals.
Developing a PKM curriculum guide book and related e-learning activities can be very useful resources for addressing the issue of learning how to teach. Teacher educators from our University and other TEIs will find the guide book useful for designing their BEd programme courses. Personal knowledge management (PKM) competencies are related with learners' effective lifelong learning (Frand & Hixon, 1999). Based on the findings of the study the PI and his team will develop a research project that extends the scope of study to the university level to verify the framework produced by this study.
