Development of an Introductory Assessment Textbook and Tutorial Materials

Abstract:

An introductory text book for undergraduate students had been written based on a revision of a New Zealand textbook co-authored by the Principal Supervisor. Pearson Education South Asia in Singapore would publish the text (Contemporary educational assessment: Practices, principles, and policies) as a custom publication in time for the start of the September 2009 semester. The revision involved locating Hong Kong resources to replace figures and content in the book to make it suitable as a required text book for the English-medium Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Bachelor of Education module CUI2087 “Assessment” and as a recommended text for English-medium Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) + (Primary) modules CUI5046 “Curriculum & Assessment”. Further, additional supplementary tutorial activities and self-quizzes were created from July to December 2009 for access through eLearning systems at the HKIEd so that it is a more complete teaching resource. Resources included a survey system on which students could evaluate their personal beliefs about assessment by completing Brown’s Teachers’ Conceptions of Assessment inventory.

Result:

The project met its major objectives, and published the textbook by Person Education Asia. Besides, the Principal Supervisor designed, tested and implemented an online survey system for collecting responses to the concepts of assessment inventory. The self-access test questions were used on Blackboard and disseminated to C&I staff for their inspection. The self-access questions were used in CUI5046 and CUI2087in Semester I 2009 and in CUI2087 in Semester IIA 2010.

Impact:

The textbook and self-access test questions are integrated into the teaching given by Principal Supervisor his students. The self-access test questions are a useful adjunct to testing for declarative knowledge and provide self-directed learning activities of approximately 30 minutes per chapter of the text book.
