Abstract:
Interactive learning with advanced technologies is a trend for future study and cultural heritage is now becoming more an important issue in the rapid developing Hong Kong society. Due to the fast change of urban landscape and cultural context, advanced technologies can help to capture the scenes of old and new, representing them to the public and students in a more attractive way instead of the archaic listing of the disappeared or disappearing heritage on books and exhibitions. The project primarily aims at enhancing learner autonomy in utilizing technology, media, and telecommunications while enhancing better interaction between student and teacher in higher education settings. Through teacher curatorship in managing digital resources with a focus on cultural heritage, this project aims at creating a unique learning space outside the classroom with the aid of an online learning web platform that is publicly accessible. Students will be guided to autonomously develop an understanding of local socio-cultural issues behind the heritage buildings. Besides developing social interaction and communication skills via this online platform, students’ critical and creative thinking skills will be enhanced by creating their own multi-media work related to the cultural heritage and through peer evaluation using innovative technology.

Students can use an online platform powered by Discuzz to post their instant feedback on art objects and heritage buildings in class or anytime beyond class. The platform act as a forum as well as a documentation centre for students and teachers to communicate and improve teaching schedules depending on the levels of student reflected through the online platform. Students tested the platform on a course themed at "Contextual Studies of Creative Art" in the Fall semester of 2019, student posted their instant feedback and comments on art as well as the platform. The teacher collected their feedback and openly discuss them with students encouraging in-class interaction. Students have their own accounts so that teachers can reply their comments whenever suitable outside class time. An existing mobile app named ARchiHK featuring Augmented Reality and GPS systems developed by the PI also enhanced with this project. Students and public are able to download this app with their smartphone through AppStore and GooglePlay. Once the app is activated and GPS function turned on, heritage routes constructed by the PI can be selected and heritage building around would be shown to users. Users can take photos and comment on heritage after administrator approval.
Impact:
In terms of Hong Kong heritage, the updated ARchiHK app is continuously recording heritage in Hong Kong's rapidly changing landscape. It acts as a form of documentation and interactive platform specially designed from Hong Kong context to locate heritage building especially for those demolished. Since users including public and students can upload photos and comments onto the app when visiting and understanding heritage building, feedbacks and contributions are expected from these participants for enriching content of the app. At the same time, expectation of users will also be collected via the app platform and class time to improve teaching schedules and contents.
For the online learning platform, it is used for student instant in-class discussion to encourage direct feedback and communication between students and teachers, especially for art and image-related topics. Students were normally not active in in-class discussion in Hong Kong, the online platform is designed to tackle this situation. Students are also expected to comment even outside class time whenever they want so teachers can efficiently reply the inquiries and thoughts. Content on the online platform will be stored for a long period so references can be made by the teacher throughout the years.
