Enhancing Professional Excellence: Developing Motivational Strategies of Pre-service Teachers in Chinese Language Classrooms

Abstract:

According to the Chinese Language Education – Curriculum Document (Education Bureau, 2017), the learning objectives of the language include nurturing learners’ interest, attitudes and habits in learning Chinese language. Nevertheless, teaching and learning of Chinese language has been focused on developing four skills and language learning strategies of learners. In order to enhance the understanding and knowledge of motivational strategies of pre-service Chinese language teachers, the project aims to adopt blended learning in the Chinese pedagogy related courses of BEd (CHL) and PGDE (S) programs. The outcomes of the project include, i) creating teaching videos introducing motivational strategies in Chinese language classroom; ii) develop the skills of students in employing various motivational strategies in their teaching; iii) establish a teaching video corpus of motivational strategies in Chinese language classrooms; iv) create a motivational strategies handbook for Chinese language teachers. Dörnyei’s (2007) Motivational Strategies Framework will be adopted as it provides the pre-service teachers with practical, systematic, flexible references of how to motivate learners at different stages, levels or contexts. The project also includes questionnaire and focus group interview data which could not only provide pedagogical insights for the teacher training programs at EdUHK but also enhance the teaching competence and professional excellence of both pre-service and in-service teachers.

Result:

The overall result of the project is positive. The motivational questionnaire developed from the project showed that the motivational strategies of the pre-service Chinese language teachers has significantly enhanced in three areas, namely a) Creating the basic motivational condition; b) Generating initial motivation; and c) Maintaining and protecting motivation. In addition, the preservice teachers focus group interviews revealed that their teaching competence has been improved and they have been implementing the motivational strategies into their teaching during the Field Experience.
The pre-service teachers also actively engaged in the project, including creating the Motivational Strategies Handbook and contributing to the video corpus. The participation of the pre-service teachers contributing to the content of the handbook further deepened and enhanced their knowledge and understanding of the motivational strategies. Through learning from the teaching videos, the students expressed that their teaching competence is enhanced. It is also shown in their performance of the micro-teaching and lesson plans, as they demonstrated the professional excellence as a result of their participation in the project.
The encouraging results shows the impact of the project, and it is expected that the deliverables created can benefit more pre-service and in-service Chinese language teachers in Hong Kong.

Impact:

During the 18 months of implementation, there are seven groups of five courses of the pre-service teachers, having more than 300 students participated in the project. The project aims to bridge the gap between motivation theories and classroom practices and successfully linked the motivation theories and classroom pedagogy in Chinese language classrooms so as to promote a theory-driven teaching approach in schools.
The three motivation teaching videos provides an overview of the key theories in language learning motivation, with discussion questions. In the same vein, the video corpus enhances the pre-service teachers' professional competence. The motivation videos and teaching videos can also be used as teaching materials in pedagogy-related courses of the BEd(CL) and PGDE(S) programmes. In addition, the Motivational Strategies Handbook offer hands on motivational strategies for practitioners. It is expected that the deliverable of the project provides valuable references not only benefits the participants of this project, but also the future students of the preservice and in-service Chinese language teachers.
Lastly, the findings of this project have been shared in the two conferences at the EdUHK, with more than 400 practitioners attended the conferences. Also, two academic publications have been written, having one is currently under reviewed and the other will be published as book chapter.
