Enhancing University Students’ Ethical Decision Making in the Digitalisation of Teaching and Learning through Scenario-based Virtual Learning

Abstract:

The new wave of digitalization has been driving a shift in higher education’s teaching and learning. Nevertheless, the adoption of digital technologies has resulted in emerging ethical issues that challenge our moral values. Enhancing university students’ ethical decision making has thus become a priority for teachers educators and researchers. Despite its significance, such discussions have not yet received full attention in university education and teacher education programmes. This project will address the gap by using a scenario-based approach to enhance university students’ ethical decision-making in relation to the digitalization of teaching and learning. A virtual learning platform with interactive components and an embedded database has been developed. Simulated scenarios situated in a variety of contexts are designed for students to explore and analyse the incidents by applying ethical theories (i.e., Deontology, Egoism, Ethics of Care, Social Contract Theory, Virtue Ethics, and Utilitarianism) and moral principles (e.g., integrity, respect, trust). Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected through surveys and focus group interviews. Evaluation will also be conducted by collecting participant feedback on the effectiveness of the scenario-based virtual learning platform. In an increasingly digitalized society, this project twill prepare university students to make ethically responsible decisions in their learning and teaching.
