Abstract:
This project aims to develop an “E-progress mapping” instrument which enables the monitoring of individual student’s progress in achieving the subject learning outcomes throughout their studies in Music and Visual Arts. Building on the practice of electronic portfolios, it also facilitates the benchmarking of student learning against the subject intended learning outcomes and professional requirements in the two subject areas.
The progress map was constructed with reference to the programme and course intended learning outcomes, the sequence of the courses offered and studied, assessment tasks required in the courses as well as evidence of student learning were collected. This provided a reflective mechanism for evaluation and quality enhancement purposes for both the lecturers and students in the Department. It also provided students with a self-monitoring instrument for progress tracking, progress checking and achievement setting towards their professional goals.

Result:
The project involved numerous students from various programmes in e-Profiloilo Mapping. A total of 96 Mahara e-portfolios were created by Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) students: 6 final year students and 90 first year students. All first-year students (n=62) of the new Bachelor of Arts (Creative Arts and Culture) programme created their Mahara e-portfolios.
Students’ attitude towards e-portfolio usage changed positively: Only less than 1/3 of surveyed students disagreed that “e-portfolio has helped me reflect on my learning”, “e-portfolio has helped me think ahead my professional identity in the future”, “e-portfolio has helped me develop my organizational skills”, “e-portfolio has helped me develop my IT skill”.
Students were more aware of their own competencies through e-portfolio building
Students had increased their understanding of their programme learning outcomes.
Knowledge and artwork sharing, and Learning community among CCA students was gradually formed under the deployment of the Mahara platform.
Students’ ICT skills, including video and audio clip preparation and communication skills were improved.
Impact:
The new concepts of creating individual student-owned learning progress map was introduced and encouraged to CCA students. a majority of participating students recognized the benefits of using e-Profiloilo Mapping. The project was a trial implementation of the e-Progress Mapping in 2011-2012. The team gained important lessons for the problems encountered. The identified issues were valuable to help understand the obstacles for e-portfolio implementation and platform selected. Many of the issues found in this project were similar to those found in the literatures.
