Field Experience Supervision in Teacher Education (FE Supervision Community)

Abstract:

Field Experience (FE) is a central component of all teacher education programmes – it is successful in-schools experience that enables student-teachers to bring together theory and practice to create engaging classroom learning experiences. This CoP brings together academic and teaching staff who have some responsibility for supervising student-teachers’ field experience. It will provide opportunities for colleagues to share experience and seek solutions that will enhance field experiences for student-teachers. The CoP will also reach out within the Institute to facilitate communication between departments and programmes and will also reach beyond the Institute to other TEIs in Hong Kong. The CoP covers areas of FE supervision such as sharing on lesson analysis and portfolio marking, lesson conferencing skills, use of digital technology in FE to support supervision and FE moderation, . Given the international use of FE in teacher education there is also the possibility of working with overseas teacher education programmes.
The objectives of the CoP are:

To facilitate the professional learning and sharing of knowledge about FE;
To improve FE supervision and hence promote learning outcomes for our student-teachers;
To support the implementation of the 335 FE curriculum;
To capture the good practice in FE supervision; and
To develop self-renewal strategies for sustaining the CoP in various domains that support the development of our Institute.

The CoP successfully facilitates the professional learning and sharing of knowledge about FE. Through conducting seminars, workshops, knowledge cafe, a collaborative platform have been institutionalized for knowledge sharing in FE supervision, in which peer mentoring in lesson analysis and FE supervision are carried out. Members and participants of the CoP in FE supervision are benefitted from using different lesson analyzing frameworks including subject knowledge specific, metacognitive, main theme approach to evaluate student teachers teaching performance and adapting effective facilitation approaches and questions to provoke student teachers’ reflections on reframing their lessons and designing improvement plans for next round of teaching. Improving FE supervision will promote positive learning outcomes for our student-teachers.
There are fruitful discussions on how to enact the “FE assessment for student teachers’ learning” that using the assessment results to facilitate our student teacher’s reflective learning in different CoP meeting. Members and participants of the CoP are well received this point and are using questioning approach in the post lesson discussion part of the FE supervision to provoke student teachers reflection on reframe their lessons.
The CoP effectively supports the implementation of the 335 FE curriculums. A Video Based Learning Community (VBLC) platform was constructed to facilitate the FE modulation and standardization of using the new FE supervision form under the 335 FE curriculums. This technology enables online assessment of teaching videos, and the machine-generated statistics facilitated standardization meeting to minimize the discrepancy on the FE assessment amongst FE supervisors, which was important to the quality assurance of the assessment process of the 335 FE curriculums.
In general, there are very positive comments of using the VBLC platform and conducting CoP meeting for FE modulation and standardization and sharing their FE practices so as to co-construct knowledge for teacher education. There are great potential of applying the VBLC to create a self-renewal strategy for sustaining and expanding the CoP into different departments so as to support the development of our Institute.
