Abstract:
This project aims at developing an enhanced curriculum of artificial intelligence (AI) and maker education (as the AI Maker course) with the diverse expertise of our project team. All students in our faculty will be informed to access this self-directed learning course with different learning units hosted on an online platform. The units start with AI fundamentals to the realisation of AI literacy and Maker’s skills as the mini-projects. The second highlight is that AI will play a significant role in developing STEM education in Hong Kong. From the recent speech by Chief Executive of HKSAR, the Government will devote more resources to enhance Hong Kong’s R&D and application capabilities in the AI field. Meanwhile, there are also more AI-related training sessions available in EDB’s Training Calendar System to boost the knowledge and skills of in-service teachers for STEM education. Thirdly, the course includes the application of design thinking which is recognised as the catalyst of creative thinking. As both the textual materials and related video-taped hands-on skills for the integration of AI literacy and Maker’s skills will be prepared in the project, learning will become more flexible. Moreover, learning is no longer relying on face-to-face mode, remote learning experience will be enhanced thus more sustainable learning environment will be established during the lockdown of education, such as in the COVID-19 situation.

Result:
The project is developed with some delay but finally all six units completed. The students are generally excited with the 3D animation and the content also helped the students to systematically equip with knowledge and skills about artificial intelligence (AI), Design Thinking, and Maker Education. In particular, the integration of AI, Design Thinking, and Maker Education is new but essential for the pre-service teachers and the professionals of non-education programmes.
Impact:
Our project aims at developing and providing consolidated resources of “AI Maker”. By using Google Classroom to host learning units with textual content coupled with related 3D animation and videos, learning content of different sections will be created for catering learning differences which is important for remote learning. For the fast learners, they can learn or access the more difficult sections. On the other hand, students will slower learning pace can learning sequentially from the first to the last units. It is especially effective during the COVID-19 situations. We have also intentionally produced various live demonstrations of AI and Maker’s skills (e.g., 3D modelling techniques, and 3D printer and laser cutting operations) as videos in the latter units which are also pedagogical considerations with the concepts and practical use of flipped classroom. Meanwhile, the use of Google Classroom also enables: 1) the use of G Suite for Education provided by Google which is available in our university for all students, so no additional registration by students is needed; 2) free and easy for managing content, so operations such as embedding online videos, uploading multimedia elements, disseminating formative and summative assessments are more flexible with the autonomy by instructors instead of the server administrator; and 3) shorter learning curve as the interface of Google Classroom is consistent with most of Google services.
