International Postgraduate Roundtable and Research Forum cum Summer School in Education, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts and Humanities — Building Students as Academic Leaders

Abstract:

International Postgraduate Roundtable and Research Forum cum Summer School is a consolidated platform to provide postgraduate students of EdUHK, local UGC-funded institutions and tertiary institutions in Greater China region and overseas with global engagement and networking opportunities. The theme of the events is “Building students as academic leaders”. It is a unique assembly held in summer of 2017 and 2018 at EdUHK for and by students. A total of more than 550 postgraduate students participated in the events and delivered presentations about their research, and over 100 served as student panel chairs. Representatives from universities in more than 10 different countries served as members of the Organizing Committee. Apart from student presentations, there were also keynote speeches and roundtable discussions led by world-renowned scholars. Workshops aimed to enhance different research skills that are essential for postgraduate students. The events encouraged students to collaborate more fully across borders and disciplines than they have done traditionally, to gain experience in presenting their work and communicating with peers from all around the world, to work more fully with diverse cultures and communities, and to be engaged in the international discourse on research methodology and assessments in education, social sciences, liberal arts, and humanities.

Result:

With the concerted efforts of global engagement, postgraduate students of EdUHK as well as the visiting students developed a network with local UGC-funded universities, as well as regional and international institutions, including in France, Australia, USA, Germany, Japan, Korea, Macau, Mainland China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Taiwan, . . . etc. The International Postgraduate Roundtable and Research Forum cum Summer School acted as a platform where postgraduate students engaged in dialogues regarding their research ideas, experiences and difficulties encountered with other students. Evaluation surveys showed that most participants (over 90% of respondents) found that the events provided them with an opportunity to establish local and international networks with peers. Over 80% respondents indicated that their understanding towards the development of academic leadership of postgraduate students was enriched. In addition, members of the Organizing Committee, student panel chairs, as well as student helpers built a network among themselves throughout the process of organising the event. They made the best use of their participation to act as student leaders, and provide and receive different types of support from their peers.

Impact:

Through planning, developing and organizing the Summer School, students who took on a leadership role (such as members of the Organizing Committee, and student panel chairs) were empowered as active agents, who were self-motivated and prepared to take responsibility for their own learning and skill development. They were well aware of their own process of acquiring and enhancing research, project management and communication skills, which are essential to students' whole person development.
Apart from soft skills, the participants also acquired knowledge such as how to write a piece of effective academic writing, advice on building fruitful student-supervisor relationship and quantitative research skills by attending a series of workshops hosted by international experts. A significant number of respondents (over 85%) reflected that the workshops enhanced their academic writing and research skills. The post-event focus group discussions also found that this TDG project facilitated the transfer of knowledge and skills between postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds. The fact that such a high proportion of participants were able to benefit from an event of such a large size demonstrates the leadership skills of the Organizing Committee and the effort dedicated to the event, as well as the success of the project.
