Interweaving Visual Arts of Hong Kong

Abstract:

This project aims to keep art education in pace with trends of technological development, the academia and the Asian region. The objectives were in line with the Institute’s Strategic Plan 2009-2012 and Beyond: Firstly, it prepared both the Institute and the students for the New Senior Visual Arts (VA) curriculum. The new VA curriculum did not concern about arts making alone, it appreciated the need of arts appreciation and criticism, as well as the need to ‘rediscover links to the Chinese artistic heritage and connections to the art of Asia and other cultural contexts’. The rediscovery of both Chinese and Asian artistic heritage entrenched the study of arts and cultured at all levels; namely, the rationale of new VA curriculum echoed perfectly to SC4 “Chinese Cultural Heritage in the Modern World” within the area of study “Society and Culture” of the new Liberal Studies curriculum. By establishing an online database for teaching and learning resources of local visual art and related artists, the goal in entrenching the study of arts and cultures at all levels can be realized; a s significant number of population, including students, teachers and even the public can learn more about Hong Kong culture through this public platform.

Result:

This project piloted the methodology of oral history – student-interviewing-artist – as a means of understanding and appreciating art and potentially other art-related subjects for NSS students. It launched an interactive website of Hong Kong art (http://hkvisularts.com/), which provides an online up-to-date database of information and archival knowledge for further academic study art. The project also utilized the current state-of-the-art technology to mediate online and offline, both local and global discussion on Hong Kong art. A booklet which contains the selected transcribed interviews, art criticism completed by students, information collected as well as learning and teaching material designed for all levels was also published.

Impact:

The activities carried out have efficiently enhanced participating students’ interpersonal techniques, research ability, capacity in art appreciation and criticism as well as critical thinking and writing skills, which in turn developed students with skills that go beyond the scope of art. Also, both the website launched and the booklet published provided up-to-date materials and archival knowledge for further academic study of art.
The project, with its output, has kept art education in pace with trends of technological development, the academia and the Asian region. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the project has effectively prepared students to embrace the age of diversified and active learning. To sum up, it helped prepare both the Institute and the students for the New Senior Visual Arts curriculum.
