Abstract:
Jiao festival (太平清醮) is a large scale communal festival which is inscribed to the intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong because of its historical and socio- cultural significance. Although the Bun Festival in Cheung Chau Island shared the same Chinese name, Jiao festivals in the New Territories which are originated mainly from lineage based traditional rural society, have completely different festival cycle, organizers, rituals, activities and traditions. This project aims to incorporate VR materials of the festival setting in order to explore the dynamics of local communities and heritage practice, and to provide a valuable representation of the intertwined relationship between ritual, spatial distribution of sacred sites, kinship pattern, overseas connections and local history.

Result:
The Jiao festival in which many lineages organize once in 10 years, would take more than a year to for the corresponding lineage or lineage alliance to prepare this event. After the completion of each festival, the temporary built festival site would be demolished and lineage members will return to their normal life and look forward to the next festival in accordance with their festival cycle. By adopting VR technology, the VR tour could capture a valuable moment of the local community with socio-cultural significance.
Impact:
This project could enhance student’s awareness on local history and intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong. By providing opportunities and trainings to conduct fieldwork research on cultural heritage, students are equipped with the skills to conduct fieldwork research, oral history interview, data collection and participatory mapping, especially the features of the heritage and traditions of local community. The project could also develop student’s ability to articulate spatial data and integrate local knowledge such as local community’s traditional value and cultural landscape as well as to examine contemporary development of the local community and the issues of intangible cultural heritage conservation. In addition, students would appreciate cultural diversity and the aesthetics of cultural heritage.
