Promoting Art Appreciation among B.Ed. In-service Student Teachers, their School Children and the Public with the Use of an Online Whiteboard: Padlet

Abstract:

The project aims to enhance and widen the scope of art appreciation among in-service student teachers in the course of Art Appreciation and Assessment of Children:, Artistic Development (AAACAD) in the B.Ed.(ECE) Part-time programme, as well as their school children and the public with the aid of a free online white board, Padlet. Padlet enables a new form of assessment in the B.Ed. course and an innovative measure of portfolio in early childhood settings. The project will lead to three advantages: First, the student teachers of AAACAD can present and share their own in-depth written analysis on an exhibit selected from a designated museum gallery on a common online platform with the aid of pictures and a video clip. Second, the Padlet can be publicly shared with the participants’ consent. It will facilitate wider scope of review on the gallery exhibits among the students and the public. Third, in-service student teachers will try to use Padlet to publicize their children’s work and verbal sharing among the children and parents of the same class in 5-10 kindergartens.

Result:

In the Phase I of the project, a Pad let wall was constructed that consisted of in-service student teachers' analysis on exhibits in the 'Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition: Claylaboration '. It provides a show case to display students' hard work, and a database to guide the whole class and the public to appreciate the exhibits https://padlet.com/lhcheung/j9czur95fru8.
Many students (29 and 31 out of 33 responses respectiveiy) commented that Padlet helped the learning of the course and sharing of classmates' analysis on artworks. Two-third would try to use Padlet in their daily teaching.
Ten kindergartens have joined the Phase II and displayed their children's artworks and verbal presentation on a Padlet wall that was shared among the children and parents within individual class. All 10 principals and 34 teachers agreed that Padlet helped children to learn art appreciation, the majority thought that it helped the report of children's learning in the evaluation. Most children involved expressed that they liked to show their own artworks and review classmates' works in the Padlet (278 and 277 out of 295 responses respectively).
The results show that Padlet is a useful learning tool in both tertiary and early childhood education.

Impact:

This TOG project proves that the Padlet can help the learning of art appreciation in various levels, e.g. tertiary and early childhood education. For the BEd(ECE) students, the 2-minute video sharing is not just an individual assignment, but also the collaborative learning through the rich database in the Padlet. It also contributes to the community through public review of their exhibits' analysis. The use of Padlet in kindergartens introduced an innovative online documentation of children's artistic development through the upload of children's artwork and video of children's verbal presentation. The children showed very positive feedback on the use Padlet to show their own and classmates' artworks. The principals and teachers also expected it would help the report of children's learning to their parents. At the end of the project, the number of beneficiaries includes 80 BEd(ECE) in-service student teachers, 339 beneficiaries in the 10 kindergartens, excluding the parents of a school who have commented on children's posts and online viewers after the Padlet walls on exhibits' analysis are open to public review in 2019.
