Researching Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles for Teaching PE in Hong Kong

Abstract:

Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles has been regarded as an universal, comprehensive and systematic pedagogical theory of Physical Education (PE) in the Western World. Across the Spectrum, the suggested 11 styles (Style A-K) categorize the chain of decisions made by teachers and/or students in the teaching and learning processes. The styles cover both teacher- and student centered methodologies illustrating “reproductive” and “productive” movement skills and knowledge with behavioral to constructivist orientation of learning. The Spectrum has seldom been researched and practiced systematically in Hong Kong. This project intends to research the application of the 11 Styles in local secondary and primary schools. How 4 PE teachers, 3 PE teacher educators and 4 pre-service PE teachers and their students experienced respective teaching and learning was collected through interviewing, writing of reflective journals and video recording of the lessons. The fine-tuned teaching packages and the research findings would be reported in a reference text and DVD to be distributed to Hong Kong schools, conferences and journals.
