Abstract:
The project aimed to enhance the global awareness of students through the courses with global elements they take, and their interactions with exchange students, where applicable, and also faculty members whose background is from other parts of the world. There were 20 participating staff who enhanced the global awareness elements of their courses (18 total). Students’ global awareness was assessed through a survey instrument over 3 semesters with a self-assessment of global awareness before and after receiving the course materials. There were 713 participating students. Interviews and self-reflective questionnaires were also used to assess participating staff observations on the global awareness of their students. Through these course materials (and other non-project related resources such as exchanges and study tours), Hong Kong-based students gain a better understanding of global awareness.

Result:
The effects of the course enhancements were assessed using student surveys, staff reflective surveys and interviews with staff and students. Based on the student surveys at the end of semester 1 2016/7 the mean scores of the items in the “Global Awareness Scale” ranged between 3.44 and 4.08 (overall mean of 3.76). This indicates that, on average, students tended to agree with the statements presented by the items (3 being “Neutral”, 4 being “Agree” and 5 being “strongly Agree”). For semester 2 2016/7 and semester 1 2017/8 the ranges were between 3.37 and 4.18 (overall mean of 3.80) and 3.36 and 4.14 (overall mean of 3.72). However, it should be noted there was no statistical significance between the pre-and post-course survey results. The feedback from staff participants indicated that generally the students had little knowledge at the start of the courses and their knowledge increased as a result of the course. It is possible that students over-estimated their global knowledge in the pre-course surveys. Interviews indicated the value of study tours for increasing global awareness and also indicated that global awareness had many different contexts, for example, extending into the appreciation of aesthetics.
Impact:
It is one of EdUHK’s missions to: prepare our students to become educators and professionals who can integrate theory and practice, and who are creative, innovative, intellectually active, entrepreneurial, socially caring and globally aware. This project impacted 20 staff and 713 students and will continue to impact on students as courses continue with the enhanced global awareness content. The video series developed by this project has potential to impact on hundreds or thousands of viewers. Already viewing figures are in the low hundreds and the series has not been actively promoted yet. We will continue to add videos as part of the work of CLLRD after the project funding has ended and actively promote these. Follow up work will be developed, based on these findings, to further promote global awareness through formal curricular and informal learning methods.

Through courses, seminars and especially through experiential learning on study tours students are empowered by increasing their global awareness. Many EdUHK programmes contain elements of globalization and we welcome colleagues to work across faculties to develop and promote topical issues in globalization that directly or indirectly affect our students
