Abstract:
This project aims to cultivate staff pedagogical thoughtfulness as a learning community through establishing a technology-enhanced environment in the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL). The idea is consistent with the Institute’s commitment to provide a ‘total learning experience’ for students. Apart from the use of Learning Management System (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle), other e-learning initiatives are yet to be explored by colleagues in CHL. To facilitate colleagues to realize the full potential of e-learning and enhance innovation in learning and teaching, this project will provide support for (i) producing digital lectures; (ii) sharing pedagogies for digital lectures; (iii) developing a department digital lecture database. Such a task-based approach not only sets a clear goal for colleagues in the same department to achieve but also provides a common ground for inquiries into pedagogies for e-learning in pertinent academic areas. To engage students in digital lectures, each lecturer participant will need to rethink carefully about the course intended learning outcomes, lecture contents, teaching and learning activities, and assessment. These reflections are crucial to effective professional development as they involve a thorough review of past teaching experiences. Through peer sharing on the design of e-learning, the emerging new ways of thinking about learning and teaching will become catalyst for department wide improvement, transforming our capacity that leads to a better learning experience for students.

Result:
The project successfully facilitated teaching and academic staff in CHL to produce at least one digital lecture per course for nine courses offered by the Department. Some members have in fact produced a range of teaching resources in the form of digital lecture. All of these are posted on the staff's Mahara page which in turn form part of the staff's personal teaching portfolio.
Impact:
The project successfully achieved its intended impact on both students and academic staff of CHL. The 9 digital lectures produced let approximately 360 students enjoy an unusual learning experience apart from traditional face-to-face lectures. As evidenced in the student online survey and focus group discussions, the digital lectures produced were generally welcome by the students because these productions facilitated their learning in different ways.
Some achievements are:
1. The project successfully produced 9 digital lectures in various Chinese disciplines such as Chinese language teaching methodologies, Chinese literature and instructional design of Chinese Language for Non-Chinese Students (NCS), etc.
2. The project team organized meetings regularly in order to share ideas and insights on the design of digital lecture with each other.
3. The organization of 2 faculty-level and 1 institute-level sharing seminars allowed the project team to share their experiences in applying digital lecture to teaching with other colleagues within the institute.
4. An individual Mahara web page was created for every project member so as to assemble the works done, and served as an online portfolio showcasing the teaching and learning achievements of each member.
