Chinese Language Learning Database for Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) – Language Training for Workplace Requirements

Abstract:

In view of the vast demand of final year students, in 2008-09 & 2009-10 academic years, Student Affairs Office (SAO) invited Centre for Language in Education (CLE) to jointly offer workshops and mock examinations of Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) of Civil Service Bureau for these students. With the Institute’s offering of diversified range of undergraduate programmes, it was anticipated that more and more of our graduates would be interested in Civil Service appointments. CLE and SAO found the need of preparing our students to take the CRE, not just for facilitating students to take the examination, but developing our graduates’ language competency to meet their future professional workplace requirement. Since most of our 4-year full-time students completed their 90-hour compulsory Chinese enhancement programme in Year 2, they didn’t have much chance to further develop their Chinese language skills afterwards to meet the needs of work after graduation. The CRE would provide an incentive for students to upkeep their Chinese language skills as well as a framework to identify language skills which the general public regards as necessary for university graduates.
As not enough resources were available to provide face-to-face classroom teaching in this area, self-access learning packages and assessments tools were developed to enhance students’ language skills as well as learners’ autonomy. SAO with its good network with the students helped promote the resources to students and provided information on their needs and feedback. Aligning with the Strategic Plan, CLE helped students to enhance language competency through the application of information and communication technology. This project thus provided a well-organized self-access language database to enhance students’ Chinese language proficiency. The resource materials would be useful for SAO in organizing related training programmes to increase our graduates’ employability.

Result:

The project can provide a well-organized language test to check students’ Chinese language proficiency. Ten sets of question and answer for CRE Chinese Language test in four areas had been produced. Some follow-up debriefing sessions also helped students to identify the strength and weakness of their Chinese language.

Impact:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the learning package, two questionnaires were designed. The first questionnaire included 7 questions which designed to gather the satisfaction of users in the CRE mock test papers in September 2010. A total number of 46 HKIEd students who sat for the mock tests were invited to complete the questionnaires. The second questionnaire included 9 questions were designed in order to get students’ feedback for the debriefing session on September 2010. There were 26 students joined for the session and 12 sets of questionnaires were collected. According to the returned feedback, on the whole, users found that the mock test papers and the debriefing session met their needs in preparing CRE test and positive feedbacks were received. There were also 2 external reviewer reports, one from the Chinese department of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and the other one from Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong (HKU). Two reviewers regarded the design and content of the project materials were appropriate and met the need of students.
