e-Health Promotion @HKIEd

Abstract:

The increasing occurrence of chronic and complex diseases is placing increasing demands on hospitals, and causing healthcare costs to escalate. To address this problem, primary healthcare is believed to decrease the overall healthcare cost to society by building a healthier population, decreasing healthcare resources and empowering individuals to manage and improve their health. The keystone to such system is education. To foster graduates to be self-reliant and lifelong learners that model healthy behaviors both personally and professionally, this project thus aims to establish Community of Practice (CoP) on a Web 2.0 platform to co-create innovative evidence-based health promotion practices for effective promotion of healthy lifestyles in school and community settings.
Objectives for student-teachers or student-health educators:

To experiment innovative evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to promote health in school and community settings.
To enhance health awareness/ healthy lifestyle or attitudes/skills.
To engage in sustained interaction in the CoP around the shared practice on effective health promotion to serve their lifelong learning needs after graduation.

Objectives for teachers or health educators

To showcase the innovative evidence-based health promotion practices for peer critique, reflection and refinement.
To co-create a CoP on e-health promotion in which the team can engage mutually in ongoing knowledge building dialogue, publish shared outcomes and advance the intellectual capital of the community to build shared best practices.
To diffuse the shared evidence-based health practices beyond HKIEd for their wider applicability by engaging stakeholders in CoP on a global level.

Computer System Usability Questionnaire version 3 (CSUQ v.3) is a 16-item, 7-point Likert-scale questionnaire. It is used to assess whether the social and collaborative technology, such as the construction of www.ehealthpromotion.ied.edu.hk, is appropriately chosen to support the CoP activities which helps create or enhance the overall learning culture. Over 70% of the respondents indicated that they were satisfied with the overall performance of the CoP website, including the quality of the system, information and interface, thus providing a supportive environment to foster the overall learning culture around the CoP site.
A user satisfaction survey was conducted in December 2014 to identify the impact of the project on learners’ learning and mastery of generic skills. 66% of respondents reflected that their health awareness was enhanced by active participation in activities around ‘eHealth Promotion @HKIEd’. 72% of respondents indicated that they were given chance to create the best health education practices together which could be shared via the website www.ehealthpromotion.ied.edu.hk locally and globally, while 72% of them revealed that their cooperative and caring attitudes, reflective and critical thinking skills and creativity were cultivated by active participation in activities around the CoP website.
One of the major objectives of the project for learners is to experiment innovative evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to promote health in school and community settings. This objective was well attained. Overall, the health practices received positive feedback from students and various participating organizations and with wide media coverage. The participants treasured such life-wide authentic learning experience and they reflected that they gained a lot, in particular, their lifelong learning capabilities including research, information technology collaboration, creativity, critical reflection, and higher order thinking. For example, over 100 school children and parents attended a series of public health promotion events at W F Joseph Lee Primary School entitled Let’s Move Your Body! Organised by undergraduate students from Bachelor of Health Education including elite athletes, the event encouraged school children to adopt healthy lifestyles with abundant exercise. The practice received encouraging feedback from students and schools and with wide media coverage. The graduates became competent and confident to be health educators and were willing to take up the leadership role to promote wellbeing of their clients when practicing in their working environment.
Another major objective of the project for educators is to co-create a CoP on e-health promotion in which the team can engage mutually in ongoing knowledge building dialogue, publish shared outcomes and advance the intellectual capital of the community to build shared best practices. Data processing is underway to analyze the quality of interactions and presence of CoP utilizing the Activity System Model (Engestrom, 1987).
