Abstract:
In recent years, in order to enhance Hong Kong young people’s understanding of the latest development and opportunities in Mainland China and to foster their sense of national identity, the Hong Kong government has proactively encouraged young people to work in Mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). ‘The Great Bay Area Youth Employment Scheme’ and ‘Funding Scheme for Youth Internship in the Mainland’ have been launched to enable students to gain work experience and establish interpersonal networks in GBA.1 In view of a potentially growing trend of local university students pursuing their career in Mainland cities of GBA, there is an urgent need to provide support and learning resources to hone students’ Putonghua communication skills in GBA workplaces. The project features a close collaboration between Putonghua teaching experts at EdUHK and industry professionals in GBA2. It aims at developing video learning resources to enhance students’ Putonghua workplace competence in GBA.

Result:
Online video learning resources on workplace Putonghua in GBA have been developed under the project, which include:
– a set of mini-course videos which contain narrated lecture slides on a wide range of topics vital to oral and written communication in GBA workplace settings
– a bank of video-taped interviews with GBA industry professionals that introduce a broad picture of the socio-cultural communicative environment in the workplace of GBA
Impact:
First, at the level of pedagogy, the project will help students to develop pragmatic awareness and explicit knowledge about Putonghua communication in the workplace context via workplace- specific language instruction, which has been a niche in EdUHK’s current Putonghua Enhancement Programme. Second, at the level of students’ development, students can benefit from the project via acquiring practical skills not only on how to enhance workplace Putonghua communicative competence but also on how to build positive interpersonal relationships in GBA, which can help to promote students’ competitiveness in employment in the future. Third, at the level of global perspective nurturing, the project will enable students holistically understand the Putonghua use and language culture in the authentic workplace context of GBA via rich video learning resources co-developed by Putonghua teaching experts in EdUHK and industry professionals in GBA. By doing so, the project will effectively compensate for students’ severe lack of immersion experience in GBA due to the prolonged pandemic, and broaden their views and foster their awareness on the socio-cultural characteristics of GBA.
