Abstract:
This project aims to adopt information and communication technology as a convenient and efficient environment to foster learner-centered learning. Colleagues from six disciplines across three faculties will be involved in this project. The online activities will be anchored with different subject disciplines and context to complement face-to-face learning. There will be no prescribed activities but learners will form online communities of practices to construct knowledge together. It is expected that newer technology, also known as Web 2.0, such as including weblogs, wikis, podcasts and social networking sites will be used mainly due to their user-friendliness and free usage. Furthermore, the Web 2.0 environments not only support interactions, but also provide statistical and tracking functions to inform educators on the interactivities of users. The project members will also form a community of practice to discuss face-to-face and online and to learn from each other about the innovative practices. Therefore, the project prepares student teachers to learn in the 21st century which can be transferrable in school contexts and also provides teacher educators an invaluable opportunity to examine and support their own practices based on their shared understanding of teaching and learning.

Result:
Sharing sessions – Two members shared their innovative practice with frontline teachers in May 2012 whilst some of the team members shared of TDG experience among team members in July 2012. It was encouraging to know that all the presenters were positive on the new experiences and which also helped the team members to learn from each other.
Conference and journal papers:
- For the course IIT 2509/ IIT 5059 Information Technology Supported Environment, Dr. Ng had submitted an abstract entitled “Transforming learning by adopting wiki for project work” and presented the findings in the 19th International Conference on Learning in August 20112. The abstract has been extended and the title was revised to “Transforming learning by creating wiki projects” and was submitted to one of its journals. The paper is accepted as a journal paper which will be published at The International Journal of Technologies in Learning (see attachment).
- For the course MUS 1178C – Music Education Methods and Strategies, Dr. Ng, Mr. Yuen and the RA had submitted an abstract entitled “Ready for 21st – century education – pre-service music teachers embracing ICT to foster student-centered learning” which is based on the activities carried out in this course and the questionnaire survey of the project. It had been accepted by 2nd International Conference on Integrated Information (see attachment). They have also submitted an extension of the abstract to its international refereed journal for possible publication. https://repository.eduhk.hk/en/publications/80dfd4f7-e210-42c9-b916-8a05...
Impact:
From the reflective analysis by the team members stated above, the new initiatives were successfully implemented even though there could be rooms for improvement in the future. It was encouraging to know that all the project objectives were met and the team members were positive on the new practice. Since some team members did not require any student assistances to create learning materials, there was some left over expenses in that category. The PI would like to thank the team for working with her and suggesting to seek students’ opinions using a questionnaire to see if there were any similarities and difference among classes even though it was not included in the original proposal. However, not all classes participated in the questionnaire collection.
To sum up, this project has provided a very valuable opportunity for the project team member from 3 faculties to form a community of practice to share their thoughts and practices which aimed to adopt IT as a change agent to foster student-centered learning which was to align with the Institute’s Teaching and Learning Plan 2009 – 2012. The PI looks forward to further collaboration with the team members in other projects.
