Good Teaching Practice – Incorporation of development of generic skills into Course Teaching at Higher Education Context

Abstract:

The HKIEd has been adopting the 4 “Cs” (namely, Character and Moral Responsibility, Competence and Professional Excellence, Cultivation of Wisdom and Intellectual Engagement and Civic-Mindedness and Social Responsibility) learning framework to prepare our graduates attaining the 7 “Generic Intended Learning Outcomes” (GILOs) (Problem Solving Skills, Critical Thinking Skills, Creative Thinking Skills, Ethical Decision Making, Oral and Written Communication Skills, Social Interaction Skills and Global Perspectives). So far, various work have been done to assess the achievement of GILOs of our students; but little has been done to study how the teaching process could be enhanced to facilitate the development of generic skills among students. The latter could be attributed to the lack of organized and systematic resources and documentation to inform teachers how they could help students achieving the GILOs in course teaching, though colleagues with teaching excellence are willing to share, and are in fact sharing their observations and reflections among their peers across the Institute.
This is obvious that a gap has to be filled, and the key concern of this project is to fill this gap by transcribing the sharing of good teaching practice into a resourceful and systematic CoP.  In gist, staff with teaching excellence will be engaged as core members to identify, share, and develop good teaching practice with the incorporation of the GILOs in course teaching.
Overall, the CoP has the following objectives:

to promote good teaching practice with the focus of incorporating the GILO(s) in course teaching.
to engage staff of teaching excellence in sharing and exchanging their teaching experience.
to further develop a peer sharing atmosphere on campus.
to build a repository of exemplars including course outlines, teaching materials and sharing/presentation materials forming the pool of resources on teaching of GILOs.
