Abstract:
Instructional videos play an important role in online learning by making lessons available to students anytime and anywhere. However, it is a time-consuming process for teachers to create instructional videos. They typically need to summarize a lot of lesson materials, design PowerPoint slides for presentation, and manually record instructional videos. Currently, our team has independently developed an online instructional video generation tool. This tool seamlessly integrates open-source large language models and other AI models, enabling it to automatically synthesize instructional videos using the course materials provided by teachers. Furthermore, the tool can generate personalized avatars that accurately reflect the teacher’s voice and appearance, thereby enhancing the visual and interactive aspects of the instructional videos. To improve the user-friendliness of the tool, we have developed a generative-AI (GenAI)-driven website to help teachers generate personalized instructional videos of courses automatically. We have also leveraged GenAI technology to automatically generate short tests or quizzes such as multiple-choice and open-ended questions related to the content of the videos.

As shown Fig.1, based on the PPT slides uploaded by the teacher, our system can assist teachers in automatically synthesizing interactive instructional videos by designing lecture scripts and questions using large language models as well as creating personalized avatars for teachers based on their own photos and voice. During this process, our system also enables teachers to interactively edit the content generated by the large language models according to their needs, such as adjusting the length of the lecture scripts or choosing whether to include avatars in the videos.
Impact:
The system we developed is significant for promoting online teaching. It not only helps teachers efficiently and cost-effectively generate teaching videos, but also provides students with richer interactive video learning resources. Specifically, it will impact online teaching in the following ways: (i) Facilitating teachers’ seamless engagement in online teaching through automated video generation. Our GenAI-driven system can enhance teacher efficiency by leveraging the latest generative AI technology. It can assist teachers in automating various tasks related to creating instructional videos. This automation will help reduce teachers’ workload and free up their time to concentrate on other aspects of teaching. (ii) Supporting students in online learning courses and fostering their perceived presence. Based on the synthesized instructional videos, our system can support students in engaging in course learning anytime and anywhere. Meanwhile, with the personalized avatars created based on teachers’ profile photos and voices, our system can enhance students’ social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence in online learning.
