Abstract:
The project aims to engage students directly in the learning and teaching experience through establishing different Student Network Groups at the Institute. Students will either lead a project by their own, or to carry out the project in collaborations with their teachers on their interested topics. In the long run, if the SNG is found effective at the Institute, projects can be moved from teacher-driven to student-driven/teacher-student partnership and it is believed that both teachers and students will benefit from this new way of learning and teaching process.
There are four sub-projects:
Multi-level primary science/ environmental education programme
International Postgraduate Student Summer School in Education, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts and Humanities 2016
Student Network Group for mobile learning of the English Language
Developing pedagogical materials and activities in practical Chinese Writing for community engagement

Each sub-project has engaged students to take up project tasks and arrange project activities. The followings are the highlights of each sub-project:
Project 1: Student participants from different programmes discussed and shared the ideas among one another through the online discussion group. Student participants initiated teaching themes and are designing their own curriculum and course.
Project 2: Student Project Leader will help to organise and manage the detailed operation and logistics of the Summer School. Members of the Organising Committee will be divided into small working groups to deal with a selected area, e.g., website development, guest speaker invitation, video recording technology, workshop material organization, etc.
Project 3: A questionnaire was designed and 100 completed questionnaires were received and 21 respondents will take part in the interview. The SNG project website was launched.
Project 4: A preliminary version of the teaching materials co-prepared by teaching staff and students has been completed and is currently used in the CSL course.
Impact:
Impact on learning
The results achieved to-date reflect that the projects are conducive to students’ learning motivation, such as engaging students in the whole learning process, enhancing students’ understanding of their investigated topic and stronger sense of responsibility for their own learning.
Engagement of students and interactions
Student participants either take part as leaders or partners of the projects. For student leaders, they certainly take up more responsibilities, especially being a contact point between teaching staff and groups of student participants .
For the teaching staff, they take up the guidance role as well as serve as the facilitator or coordinator. They use different ways to communicate with students such as face-to-face meeting and online communication.
