Abstract:
he project aims to try out the concept of “Outcome Based Learning” (OBL) in the cores and electives of professional studies in the Institute. The concept of OBL was not new and often used in the primary and secondary sectors but rarely used in tertiary sector. In the face of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS) introduced in 2009, students entering tertiary education were expected to have different characteristics from that of the old curriculum, e.g. goal orientations, learning styles, learning experiences, attitudes, etc. It was therefore interesting to find whether OBL could be used to accommodate these NSS graduates’ needs in the future development of HKIEd. There were 3 stages of development in the study. In the 1st stage, class tutors in the selected modules were invited to attend the pre-module meeting to discuss about the module objectives and establish assessment criteria. In the 2nd stage, learning and teaching was designed and occurred in various modes, contexts and timescales according to the prescribed module objectives. In the 3rd stage, students were assessed through which alternative forms of learning will be evident. Data were collected throughout the 3 stages to monitor the implementation by means of documentary evidence, interview and classroom observation. The results of the study would contribute to the exploration of how a new culture of teaching and learning and assessment can be adopted in a tertiary institute in Hong Kong.

Result:
This project showed the possibility of how OBL could be use in the teaching of different Education Studies (ES) courses. The tryout itself and the papers produced facilitated colleagues in the Department to use OBL in their teaching.
The project successfully attained the three objectives, First of all, class tutors have fully explored the process of conducting OBL through hands-on experiences in different courses offered in the HKIEd curriculum structure. With the data collected, the tutors have critically reflected on the possible factors affecting the implementation of OBL. Finally, tutors have successfully disseminated the results of using OBL approach in teaching and learning in a teacher education institution through conference presentations and Faculty seminars
Impact:
Through the tryout of OBL, colleagues had a chance to experience and reflected on the possibility of incorporating OBL, approach into their teaching and learning. Moreover, it provided a chance for colleagues to develop their scholarship of teaching through their work on OBL research and teaching in the field of curriculum, teaching and assessment. Finally, students; learning would be facilitated through this learning as a whole.
